Acupuncture is an ancient medicine involving the insertion of fine needles into the body on particular acupoints.
There are over 400 acupoints on the body based on the energy meridians flowing through the body.
Traditional Chinese medicine is based on the belief that good health is all about balance.
How does acupuncture work?
Traditional Chinese medicine explains that health is the result of a harmonious balance of the complementary extremes of yin and yang of the life force known as Qi (pronounced “chee”). Qi flows through the meridians (pathways) in the human body.
The acupuncture points are located at different locations on the meridians; this is where the flow of Qi (energy) may be accessed.
Illness is said to be the consequence of an imbalance of the forces. If needles are inserted into these points with appropriate combinations then the energy flow can be brought back into proper balance. This balance will not only resolve physical symptoms but will also connect with the mind, therefore helping our emotions and mental wellbeing.
There is now a lot of good scientific evidence around for the effectiveness of acupuncture in relieving:
- Back and joint pain
- Post-operative pain
- Osteoarthritis of joints
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy
- Nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy
Acupuncture may also be used to alleviate other conditions including asthma, depression, anxiety, menopause, eczema, infertility, weight loss, diabetes, chronic fatigue, insomnia, and supporting smoking cessation and other addictions.
There are many acupoints on the face and this is why Cosmetic Acupuncture is so beneficial as not only does it boost blood and Qi to the face and thus help to reverse the ageing process, it also taps into the meridian points to achieve re-balance and vitality throughout the body.
Of course this is just a simple, short introductory explanation of acupuncture. There are far more detailed facets to understanding this ancient and complex modality.
